When Becker Wrecker played the match of his life and caused the greatest upset in Wimbledon history…
While the 2nd seed Becker was the overwhelming favourite to win his 3rd consecutive Wimbledon in 1987, 70th ranked Peter Doohan had never won a match in Wimbledon till 1987. He went to 2nd round only in his 5th attempt after winning a 5 setter in Ist round. When he heard he was going to play Becker in 2nd round, he tentatively booked his flight.
Doohan lost to Becker in Queens Ist round a week before Wimbledon but he had noticed something about Becker’s game in that match. “Becker only hit his backhand volley to my backhand corner of the court. So my coach told me to try and return everything to Becker’s backhand volley and automatically run to my backhand corner and wait on his volley shot.” He was untouchable that day playing fantastic serve and volley. His backhand winners and volleys were a treat to watch. Doohan never played in Wimbledon after 1988…
After Doohan passed away in 2017, Becker tweeted “RIP mate! You were the better player.”
