Texas Tech Hockey Club Team to Become Official NCAA Program

LUBBOCK, TX — In a major move for Texas Tech Athletics, the university has officially announced that its men’s hockey club team will be elevated to NCAA Division I status.

The decision marks a significant expansion of the university’s sports offerings and introduces a new chapter in Red Raider history. Texas Tech will become one of the few schools in the southern United States to compete at the highest level of college hockey, signaling both growth and innovation in its athletic department.

“For years, our hockey club has shown passion, commitment, and a growing fan base,” said Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt. “This transition to NCAA competition is a reflection of the momentum and energy surrounding the sport here at Texas Tech. We’re ready to make some noise on the ice.”

The program will begin preparations immediately, including hiring coaching staff, upgrading facilities, and beginning the process of joining an NCAA hockey conference. A new home arena is also being discussed to accommodate both the team and a growing local interest in hockey.

Known for its loyal student following and energetic game-day atmosphere, the Red Raiders’ hockey team has built a strong identity even as a club program. With NCAA status now on the horizon, fans can expect bigger matchups, national exposure, and a whole new level of Red Raider pride.

Hockey is coming to Raiderland — and the ice just got hotter in West Texas.
