Michigan safety Jaden Mangham’s brother shares update on transfer decision

Michigan football is flying high after the acquisition of three new defensive backs in the transfer portal this month, including former Michigan State safety Jaden Mangham.

Mangham is a long and versatile 6-foot-2, 185 pound defender from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan who totaled 29 solo tackles, four interceptions and three passes defensed last season for the Spartans.

On Monday, Mangham’s brother Jalen released a provocative message on social media sharing his feelings on the situation, along with additional background information on why his brother may have chosen the arch-rival Wolverines.

Jaden Mangham became the third recent Wolverines transfer announcement along with Aamir Hall from Albany and Wesley Walker from Louisville.

Mangham, Hall and Walker will combine to give the Wolverines incredible depth in the defensive backfield for position coach LaMar Morgan, filling the void left by an injury to Rod Moore and Keon Sabb’s transfer to Alabama.

Mangham started as a true freshman at safety for the Spartans before getting knocked out of the game in an attempt to tackle Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson. He later starred in his sophomore season in East Lansing.

How new DBs fit on Michigan’s defense

The Michigan defense is expected to be one of the nation’s best, led by defensive line returnees Kenneth Grant, Derrick Moore and Mason Graham.

The three Wolverine transfers have a chance to secure starting positions in the backfield.

Projected All-American Will Johnson, a junior, will start at one cornerback spot, with sophomore Jyaire Hill the expected starter at the boundary cornerback position.

Hall had five passes defensed and 13 pass break-ups last season. He will likely back up Hill, although he has the talent and experience to overtake him.

Mangham is the most likely starter at free safety. Walker, a graduate student, could also start at the position as could sophomore Zeke Berry.

Regardless of how things shake out, Michigan could have the best secondary in the country yet again next season, a testament to a coaching staff led by Sherrone Moore that has done all the right things since taking over in Ann Arbor.

Former NFL QB brutally rips Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is not very well-liked in a lot of different circles. He didn’t exactly make a great first impression in Denver when he called out former Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett, essentially breaking an unwritten rule. Payton then clashed with quarterback Russell Wilson throughout the 2023 campaign and was seen visibly screaming at Wilson at times. Eventually, Payton ended up benching Wilson for the final two games of the season after the veteran signal-caller declined to defer his injury guarantee. Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf is not a fan of Payton, to say the least. During an appearance on the “Up Adams Show,” Leaf ripped Payton, saying, “I don’t know what he has on new ownership.” In other words, Leaf implies Payton may have some dirt on Broncos brass in order for the organization to give him this type of leeway. Leaf was half-joking when he made the remark, but it’s clear that he has some disdain for Payton and that he did not approve of Denver trading draft picks to the New Orleans Saints just to land him as its head coach. “They just make mistake after mistake,” Leaf said (h/t Bleacher Report). I don’t know how the general manager [George Paton] continues to have the job.” Leaf didn’t stop there, either, saying that Payton has “the worst type of ego for a head coach” and calling the Broncos’ current situation “problematic.” So, apparently, Leaf doesn’t have much confidence that rookie quarterback Bo Nix — whom Payton had ranked third on his draft board — will step in and solve Denver’s issues under center. Payton went 8-9 in his first season at the helm in the Mile High City. The Broncos did manage to go 7-4 after a dreadful 1-5 start, so that could be something Payton and Co. can build on heading into 2024. Of course, the 60-year-old experienced plenty of success with the Saints, going 161-97 across 15 seasons as the club’s coach. He also led New Orleans to a Super Bowl championship during the 2009-10 campaign. We’ll see if Payton can experience the same type of fruitfulness in Denver. He certainly hasn’t gotten off to a great start thus far, and Leaf evidently doesn’t think things will change.

Canadiens prospect’s future with the club could be in doubt
When Montreal Canadiens prospect Sean Farrell was drafted in 2020, he was seen by many as a steal. However, Farrell is coming off an injury-plagued first pro season. His first season with the AHL’s Laval Rocket, combined with other prospects surpassing him in the depth charts, have many fans dismissing Farrell’s NHL chances. Does Farrell still have an NHL future with the Montreal Canadiens, or will he continue his pro career elsewhere? Sean Farrell’s future with the Montreal Canadiens Drafted in the fourth round, 124th overall by the Canadiens, Farrell was coming off a stellar USHL season, finishing with 101 points in only 53 games. However, despite this, his stature made him fall in the draft rankings. Farrell stands at only 5-foot-9 and weighs 175 pounds. Many scouts wondered if Farrell would be able to adjust to the physical side of the game at the pro level. Sean Farrell’s career statistical overview Farrell would continue to prove people wrong following his draft. He played two subsequent seasons with Harvard where he put up 81 points in 58 games combined. What really put Farrell on the map, however, was his Olympic performance in 2022, when he had six points in four games. He also had six points in 10 games at the 2022 Men’s World Championships later that year. Despite these impressive performances against top-level men’s competition, Sean Farrell’s last year hasn’t been as successful. Farrell completed a short stint with the Canadiens after signing his entry-level deal at the end of the 2022-23 season. He had only one point in six games and didn’t look ready for the NHL level. The following season, he spent the year in Laval, posting decent numbers with 28 points in 47 games. However, he couldn’t stay healthy and suffered various injuries throughout the season. This put into question his capabilities of handling the rigors of the NHL. Canadiens depth charts The Canadiens currently have a logjam at forward. They are also anticipated to acquire some impact forwards to fill out their top-six sooner rather than later. This doesn’t bode well for Farrell’s chances at cracking the lineup with many vets and young impact guys ahead of him in the depth charts. Farrell has also fallen victim to one of the NHL’s deepest prospect pools. Once looked at as one of the organization’s top forward prospects, Farrell has since been surpassed by other prospects. These include the likes of Joshua Roy, Emil Heineman, Owen Beck and Oliver Kapanen. How Farrell fits into the Canadiens’ future The big problem with Farrell is he is a guy who relies solely on skill to get by. While he is immensely talented, this skill won’t be able to be put properly on display unless he is featured in a top-six role. However, with the Canadiens’ logjam up front and many prospects and impact players anticipated to be added to that group, Farrell will have a hard time cracking the Canadiens top-six. As a bottom-six forward, the team will likely look at guys like Beck, Roy, Heineman, and Kapanen, who play physical, two-way games while still providing some offensive upside as well. The same can’t be said for Farrell, and as a result, he has no place in the team’s bottom-six. For that reason, his future with the team is in doubt. Many fans have dismissed Farrell’s chances of playing with the Canadiens due to these factors. It’s unfair to completely dismiss Farrell ever playing with the Habs after only one pro season, however. But the Canadiens may opt to use him in a package to acquire a more impactful forward for their future. Either way, this next year or two will be pivotal for the future of Farrell with the Canadiens.

Bears WR DJ Moore Gets Brutally Honest On Justin Fields Trade
The Chicago Bears traded quarterback Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this offseason, and wide receiver DJ Moore was not surprised when the move was made. Neither was anyone else. “Business is business. I seen it coming,” Moore said, via Grant Gordon of NFL.com. “So, at the end of the day, he was the quarterback last year, now we’ve got Caleb (Williams). We’re gonna ride through H-E-L-L and back with him, so I’m just looking forward to seeing what he put out.” The Bears had the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft last month, and everyone anticipated that they would be taking Williams with the selection. That obviously signaled that Fields’ time in Chicago was running out. There was some speculation that the Bears could actually trade the pick and keep Fields, but that doesn’t appear to be an avenue that was ever seriously considered by the club. Fields, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was selected by the Bears with the 11th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. Over three years in the Windy City, Fields went just 10-28 as a starter. While he showed glimpses of potential, particularly this past season, he was never able to do it consistently enough to sell Chicago on him as its franchise quarterback moving forward. In 13 starts in 2023, Fields threw for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 61.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 86.3. He also rushed for 657 yards and four scores. Moore was Fields’ favorite target last season, as he hauled in 96 receptions for 1,364 yards while reaching the end zone eight times. The Bears made a couple of big additions to their receiving corps this offseason, trading for Keenan Allen and grabbing Rome Odunze with the ninth pick of the draft. Not only that, but Chicago signed a fine pass-catching running back in D’Andre Swift and also added tight end Gerald Everett in free agency. Plus, the Bears already have tight end Cole Kmet. Clearly, Williams will have no shortage of weapons at his disposal heading into his rookie campaign. The Justin Fields era may be over in Chicago, but the potential reign of Caleb Williams is about to get underway. That seems to have DJ Moore excited.

Cowboys QB Trey Lance details how he has changed since 49ers stint
It appears current Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance has entered the “best shape of his life” portion of the offseason following his rather forgettable two-season stint with the San Francisco 49ers. “[My confidence] is much higher than it was when I got into the NFL, for sure,” Lance said this week during organized team activities, per Nick Harris of the Cowboys’ website. “I kind of didn’t know what to expect. I think that’s probably most rookies, if not all of them at one point or another throughout that first year. I feel great about where I’m at. Continuing to get better, continuing to learn and continuing to be a better quarterback.” Lance joined the 49ers as the third overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft but spent the majority of his rookie season as a backup. He suffered a campaign-ending ankle injury two starts into the 2022 season and then watched as Brock Purdy became the new face of the 49ers. San Francisco traded Lance to Dallas in late August of last year and he essentially completed a redshirt 2023 season with the Cowboys. Lance currently is competing with Cooper Rush for the role of Dallas’ primary backup behind starter Dak Prescott. “My mindset hasn’t changed,” Lance explained. “I haven’t attacked this offseason any differently. Controlling what I can control, continuing to learn the offense and building trust with these guys and the coaching staff as well.” Cowboys quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien recently discussed how Lance is working to improve his footwork and to grow “more comfortable playing in the West Coast offense” ahead of training camp. Like Prescott, Lance is on track to reach free agency after this season. “I think the biggest thing is I’ve learned a lot about myself and who I am on and off the field,” Lance added during his comments. “This offseason, I’ve been at my best mentally, physically, spiritually knowing who I am, where I am and being able to be present.” Some assume it’s simply a matter of when, not if, Prescott and the Cowboys will come to terms on a deal that will keep him their starter beyond the 2024 season. Until that happens, though, Dallas should want to prepare as if Lance could potentially replace Prescott atop the depth chart as soon as next spring.
