NEWS NOW ;2024 ATP Finals: The three men who have qualified for Turin as Novak Djokovic makes late charge

The battle for the final few spots for the 2024 ATP Finals looks set to go down to the wire with a host of players still in the running.

World No 1 Jannik Sinner was the first man to secure his place in the season-ending tournament as the Italian booked his ticket for Turin in early August.

Since then he has dominated on the ATP Tour as he won the Cincinnati Open and US Open while he also finished runner-up at the China Open.

Alexander Zverev was next to join Sinner in the 2024 ATP Finals line-up as he qualified during his run to the quarter-final of the US Open. The German is a two-time champion and he will make his seventh appearance at the event.

Carlos Alcaraz is the most recent qualifier as he also got the job done after the US Open. The Spaniard has won four titles in 2024, including the French Open and Wimbledon trophies.

Sinner is on course to be the top seed at the season-ending finals as he has a 2,820-point lead over Alcaraz in the Live Standings, but the Spaniard’s chances of finishing the year as No 1 is mathematically better as he will drop only 400 points in Turin while Sinner is defending 1,000 points.

As things stand, Sinner is on 9,430 points, Alcaraz on 6,610 and Zverev on 6,165 while there is a big gap to the chasing pack.

The Italian was an alternate for his 2021 debut as he replaced Matteo Berrettini in the line-up. He won one match as he defeated Hubert Hurkacz and in the process became the youngest player to win a Tour Finals match since Lleyton Hewitt in 2000.

Two years later and he reached the ATP Finals outright for the first time as finished fourth in the Race To Turin.

This time he stunned world No 1 Novak Djokovic in his opening round-robin match and went on to reach the final, but Djokovic got his revenge as he won in straight sets.

Other than Djokovic, Zverev is the only multiple ATP Finals champion still active as he won titles in 2018 and 2021.

Carlos Alcaraz qualified for the 2022 ATP Finals, but he withdrew due to injury. He finally made his debut last year and he reached the semi-final before losing in straight sets against Novak Djokovic.

The list of players who are still in contention for qualification is quite long with Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz looking quite comfortable as they occupy fourth and fifth in the standings.

Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev and Alex de Minaur have lost some ground in recent weeks due to poor form and injury while Novak Djokovic has somehow stayed alive in the race despite not playing a lot of tennis this year.

Djokovic – who won a record seventh ATP Finals last year – could move into the top five if he wins this week’s Shanghai Masters.

Race To Turin Live Points

4. Daniil Medvedev – 4,720
5. Taylor Fritz – 3,990
6. Casper Ruud – 3,805
7. Andrey Rublev – 3,580

13. Hubert Hurkacz – 2,680
14. Frances Tiafoe – 2,510

Those outside the current top eight still have some time to make up ground after Shanghai as there are three ATP 250 events next week (Almaty Open, European Open and Stockholm Open) before the ATP 500 Swiss Indoors and Vienna Open.

The final spots, though, will most likely be settled at the final ATP Masters 1000 event of the year, the Paris Masters, from October 28 to November 3.
