Two years later and he reached the ATP Finals outright for the first time as finished fourth in the Race To Turin.
This time he stunned world No 1 Novak Djokovic in his opening round-robin match and went on to reach the final, but Djokovic got his revenge as he won in straight sets.

Daniil Medvedev claims Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz have ‘extra advantage’ at Shanghai Masters
Alexander Zverev
Previous ATP Finals appearances: 6
Other than Djokovic, Zverev is the only multiple ATP Finals champion still active as he won titles in 2018 and 2021.
The German – who won the Italian Open and finished runner-up to Alcaraz at Roland Garros – exited in the round-robin phase last year
Carlos Alcaraz
Previous ATP Finals appearances: 1
Carlos Alcaraz qualified for the 2022 ATP Finals, but he withdrew due to injury. He finally made his debut last year and he reached the semi-final before losing in straight sets against Novak Djokovic.
The list of players who are still in contention for qualification is quite long with Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz looking quite comfortable as they occupy fourth and fifth in the standings.
Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev and Alex de Minaur have lost some ground in recent weeks due to poor form and injury while Novak Djokovic has somehow stayed alive in the race despite not playing a lot of tennis this year.
Djokovic – who won a record seventh ATP Finals last year – could move into the top five if he wins this week’s Shanghai Masters.
