Leeds United set to join exclusive Championship group amid transfer agreement

Leeds United are set to join only a handful of Championship clubs in sitting on a minus net spend this January transfer window, as things stand.

The Whites have yet to acquire a new signing this month, with Bristol City, Coventry City and Sheffield Wednesday in the same boat. United have allowed two senior players to leave on loan, though.

Joe Gelhardt has joined Hull City for the rest of the season, having failed to play under Daniel Farke since early October. Meanwhile, midfielder Charlie Crew, who was handed his senior debut in November, has linked up with Doncaster Rovers.

Of course, none of those exits have accrued a fee given United have yet to sell a player this month. But that is about to change.

United are poised to sanction the permanent sale of Sonny Perkins to Leyton Orient, where he is currently spending the season on loan. Earlier this month, Orient boss Richie Wellens admitted he wished to acquire attacker Perkins on a full-time basis.

A deal is expected to go through before Monday’s deadline, with United due to receive an undisclosed fee along with a healthy sell-on percentage should Perkins be sold later down the line. The 20-year-old has recorded four goals and six assists in 29 matches for Orient this season.

He has only made four senior appearances for Leeds since signing from West Ham in 2022, although did manage to score against Cardiff City in the FA Cup in January 2023. The youngster’s Leeds contract is due to expire this summer, meaning this is the last window the club can gain a fee for him.

But by receiving money for Perkins, United will go into the green regarding January transfer net spend, should they not purchase a player in the meantime. As things stand, only two other clubs have recorded positive net finances this month, according to Transfermarkt.
