How did players who left Alabama football after Nick Saban retired perform in 2024?
|After Nick Saban retired in January, it was open season on Alabama football’s roster. Players had an extra transfer portal window after the change, and 10 of them took advantage of it, though Kadyn Proctor found his way back to Tuscaloosa after a brief time with Iowa.
Even with the tackle back in the fold, the Tide still lost a lot of talent during the extra portal entry window. With the regular season over, here’s a look at how the players who left UA after Saban retired performed in 2024.
Isaiah Bond– WR
After a season that saw him enshrined in Alabama lore for his 4th-and-31 Iron Bowl-winning catch, Bond became the first player to hit the door once Saban retired. He soon committed to Texas, joining former UA offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian in Austin.
Bond caught 33 passes for 532 yards and five touchdowns throughout the season. He and the Longhorns will play Clemson at home in the first round of the College Football Playoff, after losing the SEC championship game against Georgia.
Shawn Murphy– LB
The reserve linebacker made five tackles in two season for the Crimson Tide. He joined a flurry of Alabama players who headed to Florida State last offseason.
The Seminoles underperformed after a successful 2023 that saw them spurned from the CFP in favor of Alabama, running dead last in the ACC. Murphy played in four games, totaling 13 tackles.
Dezz Ricks– DB
Ricks saw action in two games as a true freshman for Alabama in 2023. He moved within the SEC after Saban retired, landing at Texas A&M.
He played in all of TAMU’s games in 2024, starting seven. Ricks finished the regular season with 18 total tackles and an interception, and the Aggies will face Southern Cal in the Las Vegas Bowl to end the season.
