Sven Botman and Anthony Gordon are injury doubts for Newcastle United’s trip to face Manchester City next weekend, while Dan Burn is also set to undergo a scan for a groin issue, Chris Waugh of The Athletic reported on Saturday.

“Botman, 25, and Gordon, 23, did not travel to St Andrew’s for Newcastle’s come-from-behind 3–2 FA Cup fourth-round victory over Birmingham City due to knee and quad problems respectively,” Waugh wrote. Burn, meanwhile, was substituted in the 55th minute with a groin injury.

Manager Eddie Howe acknowledged the growing injury concerns in his squad, which are also accentuated by a glaring lack of depth across the roster.

“It seems that we’re just going through a little spell where a lot of big efforts in games and we’re just picking up one or two injuries, which is a real concern for us because we have such a small squad, as we’ve said all season,” Howe said.

Howe was unsure whether Gordon would recover in time for the Man City match. “We hope so,” Howe said on Saturday. “He’s not here today, which means he’s obviously got a problem.”

Botman, who was forced off during Newcastle’s Carabao Cup semi-final win over Arsenal, remains uncertain for next weekend.

“I don’t know at this moment in time,” Howe said. “Of course, we’d love him to be, but we don’t know how serious Dan’s injury is at the moment.”

With Lloyd Kelly departing for Juventus in January, Newcastle’s defensive depth has been further stretched. Howe admitted Burn’s inclusion against Birmingham was not ideal, but simply necessary because of the lack of alternatives.

“I was a reluctant starter of Dan tonight. I didn’t want to take that risk with any of our players that played against Wednesday because we knew the physical cost of that game, but numbers dictated we had to,” he said.

Newcastle will continue to assess all three players in the coming days before making a final determination on their availability for the trip to the Etihad on Saturday, Feb. 15.
