The Edmonton Oilers have just announced the team has signed goalie prospect Nathaniel Day to a three year entry level contract

Day was one of the top Oilers prospects highlighted in need of a contract extension this offseason. Sighing Day will be a key part of keeping up the Oilers goalie depth.

Oilers sign goaltender prospect Nathaniel Day from OHL

The Edmonton Oilers selected Day with a 6th round pick in the 2023 NHL draft. The 6’4, 20 year old goaltender has played four seasons with the Flint Firebirds of the OHL.
Day’s stats to surface stats certainly aren’t popping out as an emerging young goalie. He was able to start 59 games last season – which is a very tough workload – but only put up a .894 save percentage. In his OHL career, he’s never been above .900 on a season.
While those stats aren’t encouraging, they’re not enough to write him off as a prospect yet. Not all shots are of equal value, and Day’s relentless workload as well as the Firebird’s poor season could affect his numbers.

Could Nathaniel Day become an NHL goalie for the Oilers?

Day had a few highlights over the course of last season, including winning OHL goalie of the week three times, and a standout performance at the Oilers Young Stars Classic.
When he’s been at his best, Day’s size and athleticism can combine to look near unstoppable. Consistency will be the key for him to work his way up the ranks.Hopefully Day can now continue to develop within the Oilers organization, adding some depth to the team for the near future and potentially developing further into an NHL goalie.
