Coco’s comeback Trail: Exciting times Ahead with New coaching setup

Coco Gauff has reinforced her coaching team for the remainder of this season and into next year. After ending her partnership with Brad Gilbert post-US Open, she has brought on Matt Daly to work alongside her long-time coach, Jean-Christophe (“JC”) Faurel. Daly, a former collegiate player at Notre Dame, previously coached Denis Shapovalov on the ATP Tour. Gauff began collaborating with Daly shortly before heading to Beijing for the China Open.

“I’m really excited,” Gauff shared with WTA Insider in Beijing. “I think this setup will likely continue next year. I’m eager for change and to enhance aspects of my game.”

Reflecting on her time with Gilbert, she said, “It was a great partnership, but I felt it was time for a reset to improve my game for next season.” Her primary focus is on her serve, especially after a challenging fourth-round exit at the US Open, where she had 19 double faults.

While Gauff noted that her changes are “subtle,” she has already seen significant improvement in practice. “It’s not about a complete overhaul—just minor adjustments that can help,” she explained.

Seeded No. 4 in Beijing, Gauff will face Clara Burel in her first match and currently ranks No. 6 in the PIF Race to the WTA Finals, aiming for her third consecutive Finals appearance. “I’ve never felt pressured except the first year. Qualifying would be great, but I’m focused on this new coaching setup,” she said, emphasizing a relaxed approach to the tournament.

In contrast to last year’s exhaustion after her Grand Slam victory, Gauff feels revitalized this time, having explored more of the city and enjoyed time at home. “I’m hoping to finish the season strong,” she concluded.
