Ohio Stadium, affectionately known as “The Shoe,” has been an iconic fixture in college football since its dedication in 1922. Over the years, it has undergone several renovations to enhance the experience for fans and players alike. The most recent significant renovation, a $42 million project, commenced in 2017 and concluded in 2020. This comprehensive upgrade aimed to preserve the stadium’s historic integrity while introducing modern amenities and improvements.

Key Aspects of the Renovation:

1. Structural Enhancements:

• Concrete Restoration: The project focused on restoring and recoating the 94-year-old concrete, particularly on the C Deck, to ensure the stadium’s longevity and safety.

• Power Distribution Upgrades: Improvements were made to the power systems in the east, west, and south stands, enhancing the stadium’s overall infrastructure.

2. Seating and Capacity Adjustments:

• Luxury Additions: The renovation introduced 35 loge boxes and 12 luxury suites, providing premium viewing experiences for fans.

• Capacity Reduction: To accommodate these new features, approximately 2,600 seats were removed, reducing the stadium’s capacity from 104,944 to 102,854. Notably, many of the removed seats were in sections with obstructed or less-than-ideal views.

3. Fan Experience Enhancements:

• Improved Concessions and Facilities: The renovations included the addition of more concession stands and restrooms, aiming to reduce wait times and improve overall convenience for attendees.

• Refurbished Concourses: Updates to the concourse areas provided a more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing environment for fans as they navigate the stadium.

4. Technological Upgrades:

• Scoreboard and Display Systems: A state-of-the-art scoreboard was installed, offering clearer visuals and enhanced replay capabilities to enrich the game-day experience.

• Enhanced Viewing for Obstructed Seats: For areas with previously obstructed views, better scoreboards and larger TVs were installed to ensure all fans have access to live game action and updates.

Recent Updates and Future Considerations:

As of August 2024, Ohio State University announced ongoing improvements to Ohio Stadium to further elevate the fan experience:

• Cannon Drive Construction: Cannon Drive has been closed to traffic, except for those with specific parking passes and service vehicles. This change affects access routes to the stadium, and fans are encouraged to plan accordingly.

• Digital Ticketing: To streamline entry and enhance security, the university has fully transitioned to mobile ticketing. Fans are advised to load their tickets onto their mobile devices before arriving at the stadium.

These continuous enhancements reflect Ohio State’s commitment to preserving the rich history of Ohio Stadium while adapting to modern needs and technologies. Fans can look forward to a blend of tradition and innovation, ensuring that “The Shoe” remains a premier destination for college football enthusiasts.
