Is Gio Reyna’s time at Borussia Dortmund finally coming to an end?
According to a report from Ruhr Nachrichten, the Bundesliga side has put Reyna on its “strike list,” meaning the club will listen to offers for his services in the summer.
It’s been another frustrating campaign for the U.S. men’s national team attacker, who continues to only find himself playing a bit-part role at Dortmund. After missing the first three months of the season with a groin strain, Reyna has played less than 400 total minutes, making just three starts.
The 22 year-old has managed to tally two goals and one assist in 16 appearances across all competitions.
After breaking out as a teenager during the 2020-21 season, Reyna’s time in Dortmund has been blighted by injuries and coach’s decisions. Reyna played nearly 2,000 league minutes in 2020-21. Since then, his highest total has been 625 minutes.
This season has seen Reyna fail to convince two different coaches — Nuri Şahin and the recently appointed Niko Kovač — that he deserves to be more than a peripheral figure.
Reyna extended his contract through 2026 prior to heading on an ill-fated loan to Nottingham Forest midway through last season.
As the midfielder’s deal enters its final 18 months, Dortmund would need to sell this summer to avoid the midfielder entering the final year of his contract.
