Borussia Dortmund’s shocking season sees them down in the bottom half of the table, at the time of writing, and struggling to climb their way up again. The gap to 4th spot in Rasenballsport Leipzig (ew) and qualification to the Champions League (outside of a miraculous and unlikely recovery from German football in Europe that sees them win a 5th UCL spot again) is “just” seven points, so the mission to retaining Champions League football is far from failed. Nor should one of Germany’s biggest clubs suffer the humiliation of missing out on the tournament. Germany needs Dortmund to do better.

But if Die Borussen do miss out and break their streak of regular Champions League participation, consequential action would need to be taken. According to Sport Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), if that were to happen, a star player Bayern Munich is interested in would be up for sale:

Should they fail to qualify for the Champions League next season, Borussia Dortmund are planning to sell a ‘star player’ in order to offset the financial losses. Jamie Gittens is the hottest candidate. Bayern and Chelsea are interested in the Englishman. Dortmund are expecting €80-100m for Gittens.

Finances in the world of football are certainly bizarre, but attaching such a big price tag for a player who started the season as nothing more than an impact player off the bench would be nothing short of ludicrous. Such a price tag may scare Chelsea FC and Bayern off. Then again, this is Bild we are talking about here and exaggerating numbers is their favorite pastime, after all.
