Aston Villa Veteran Goalkeeper Robin Olsen Reportedly Declines Contract Extension Amid Uncertainty Over Future Role at Club

Aston Villa’s experienced goalkeeper Robin Olsen has reportedly turned down the club’s latest offer to extend his contract beyond the 2024–2025 season. The 34-year-old Swedish international, who has served primarily as backup to Emiliano MartĆnez since joining permanently in 2022, is believed to be seeking more clarity over his long-term role at Villa Park as his current deal approaches its final months.

Sources close to the club suggest that Olsen’s reluctance to commit stems from a desire for more regular first-team football, something he has struggled to secure during his time in Birmingham. Despite stepping up admirably in a handful of matches this season—most notably keeping a clean sheet in a narrow 1-0 win over Brentford in March—his overall minutes on the pitch remain limited, fueling speculation about his future.

The Swedish shot-stopper, capped over 75 times by his national team, has enjoyed a distinguished career across Europe, including stints at AS Roma, Everton, and Copenhagen. His professionalism and leadership have been praised within the Villa camp, but it appears both parties may now be preparing for an amicable parting of ways in the summer transfer window.

Manager Unai Emery is said to respect Olsen’s position and has reportedly left the door open for continued negotiations, but the club is also understood to be exploring alternative goalkeeping options ahead of next season. Villa’s recent acquisition of Australian keeper Joe Gauci may further complicate Olsen’s path to more playing time, adding weight to the belief that he could be on the move.

As the Premier League campaign nears its conclusion, Olsen’s decision not to renew his contract will likely prompt interest from other clubs in search of a reliable and experienced goalkeeper. Whether his future lies elsewhere in England or back on the continent, Olsen’s time at Villa has proven he remains a capable and composed presence between the posts.
