The family of late One Direction star Liam Payne has spoken out on the ‘lasting damage’ of his death following a tribute to the singer aired at this weekend’s Brit Awards ceremony.
One Direction singer Payne tragically died aged 31, on October 16, 2024, after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Latest to pay tribute to the much-loved star was the Brit Awards, and the moment had viewers sobbing.
Host Jack Whitehall began by introducing a video segment that showed clips of Payne over the years and an older clip of him talking about how special the industry was to him.
During the segment, Whitehall described Payne as ‘a very special person who meant so much to so many people in this room.’ He then went on to highlight the singer’s life and legacy, as a video montage left viewers in floods of tears.
Following the tribute, Payne’s family said how they will ‘forever remember’ the joy he brought into the world with his music.

About the segment, a statement from Payne’s family said: ‘This weekend, at the Brit Awards, Liam was remembered for his phenomenal contribution to British music and for his wider, positive impact on millions of adoring fans the world over.
‘We joined in that celebration of his life and will forever remember the joy that his music brought to the world.
‘Liam, you are so loved and missed,’ the family added.
Elsewhere in the full statement, the family spoke of ‘the lasting damage’ his death had wrought.
‘Liam’s death was an unspeakable tragedy. This is a time of tremendous grief and pain for those who knew and loved him,’ the statement continued.

‘Liam ought to have had a long life ahead of him. Instead, Bear has lost his father, Geoff and Karen have lost their son, Ruth and Nicola have lost their brother and all of Liam’s friends and fans have lost someone they held very dear.
‘We understand that the investigation into Liam’s death was absolutely necessary and the family recognises the work done by the Argentinian authorities. However, the family accepts the Court of Appeal’s decision to drop all charges.’
This comes as charges were dropped against three key defendants, reported to be Payne’s friend Roger Nores, Gilda Martin, the manager of the Casa Sur Palermo Hotel where he died, and the hotel’s main receptionist.
The other two defendants are facing prosecution on charges they supplied Payne with narcotics.
His family continued: ‘The constant media attention and speculation which has accompanied the process has exacted indescribable, lasting damage on the family, particularly on Liam’s son, who is trying to process emotions which no seven-year-old should have to experience.
‘The family has always wished for privacy to grieve and asks that they be given the space and time to do so.’

As this weekend’s tribute began, host Whitehall intoned: ‘It is now time to take a moment to remember a very special person who meant so much to so many people in this room and to millions of you around the world.’
‘He achieved so much in the short time that he was on this earth, and he was not only a supremely gifted musician but an incredibly kind soul who touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with.
‘We have so many amazing memories of Liam here at the Brits, so tonight we celebrate his legacy and look back and remember the remarkable Liam Payne.’

In a clip featuring his voice, Payne could be heard saying: ‘Wherever I went, my dad could be heard telling people I could sing.’
‘We never expected anything of this to happen, and for me, it’s like waking up to 80,000 people screaming your name,’ Payne went on, talking of his One Direction fame.
Pictures of him over the years, including as a child and with his family, played over his rendition of Little Things, as well as clips of the band’s X Factor days and snaps of Payne with his son Bear.

‘I hope that me singing today brings some people some enjoyment somewhere,’ he added, before clips of One Direction’s touring days aired.
We thought something might happen but never anything like this, I am always trying to remind myself of where I’ve come from and get to in life, it’s amazing really.’
Following the tribute, Payne’s former bandmate Louis Tomlinson took to X to share his appreciation, writing: ‘Thank you @BRITs . Beautiful tribute. Miss you always brother x.’
As Tomlinson thanked the awards ceremony, fans below shared their fresh grief the moment evoked.
