Bayern Munich was able to come away from Stuttgart with max points despite not having a handful of usual starters available.
Leon Goretzka and João Palhinha started in the heart of midfield due to both Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović not being available through injury, but history has shown this season that Vincent Kompany very much prefers starting the latter two when he has his choice.

Focus for Bayern now shifts to the first leg against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League Round of 16 at the Allianz Arena. For the German Rekordmeister it will be a fourth chance of the season to get the better of Xabi Alonso and Die Werkself having already faced them twice in the Bundesliga and once in the DFB-Pokal.

As far as personnel is concerned for Bayern, Kompany said that there is a chance Kimmich could be fit on time to play a part in the first leg against Leverkusen on Wednesday. “I wouldn’t say [he will definitely be there] yet, but it’s looking good. Jo is robust. If everything goes well, then we’ll have Jo available. I don’t think he’ll be out for that long,” the Belgian manager explained (via @iMiaSanMia).

Kimmich came off injured in the first half of Bayern’s 4-0 Bundesliga routing of Eintracht Frankfurt in what was official ruled to be tendonitis after scans thankfully revealed he did not tear anything. For a player that had played just about every minute of football up until he was taken off in that match, an injury like this was bound to happen and Kimmich is perhaps a bit lucky that the extent of the injury was nothing more serious. He was initially hoping that he would be fit on time for the Stuttgart match, but that window of time was just too short.

Ideally, if Kimmich is fit enough to play in leg one against Leverkusen, Kompany could also rest him for next weekend’s Bundesliga match against VfL Bochum to preserve him for the second leg, but knowing Kimmich, he’ll want to play every minute of the Bochum match and the second leg against Leverkusen.
