I need to know the truth about what Americans think about Penn state

I’m an international student at Penn state, I find the academic environment very good and overall I really like here and i’m proud of being a psu student. But today one of my American friend (student here) told me that Penn state is not a great school and that in America it’s not very respected. She told me that in America penn state is the school where everyone get into and student with not very good grade comes here. She also told me that there is lot of school way better than psu in Pennsylvania and listed bunch of school that I don’t even knew the name (vanillalova). I always taught that penn state is a very good school and when I see the ranking in my major we are number 6 in the US (industrial engineering) so i cannot believe what she is saying, psu is a safety school and well know for being a school where average and low students goes ? Is it true that it’s not a respected university in the US?
