Everton had to operate really shrewdly in the January transfer window.
David Moyes made no secret of the fact Everton were still dealing with PSR issues, however, he still hoped to bring in a centre-forward.
Ultimately, he didn’t get his wish, though, it sets the club up well for the summer window, with the Friedkin Group allowed to spend much more freely.

Everton did manage to get one fresh face through the door in the shape of Carlos Alcaraz, who joined on an initial loan deal from Brazilian outfit Flamengo.

The deal will become a permanent one if certain clauses are met and it’s understood the fee will be around £15m.

With that said, the Brazilian media are shocked at how Everton have managed to pull off the Alcaraz deal with the conditions involved.

Brazilian media stunned by conditions of Carlos Alcaraz deal
Brazilian journalist Mauro Cezar Pereira, via Gazete do Urubu, has come out in disbelief at Flamengo’s decision to loan Alcaraz with a permanent clause worth just £15m.

“The most expensive player in the club’s history was sold without any profit to Flamengo, zero profit, to a club desperate for the player, Everton, with a collection of injured players, in need of an athlete for this role,” Pereira explained.

“Everton had to avoid an immediate purchase due to the financial fair play that took eight points from them in the previous English season and this one that is currently under dispute.

“In other words, Flamengo accepted favourable conditions for Everton, correct? They could have said: okay, I accept the conditions, but I don’t want 20 million. I want 25, I want 30, I want 20% of a future sale.”

Pereira thinks Everton will sell Alcaraz for double the amount
Alcaraz is highly-rated in his native Argentina and indeed around Europe, such is why he’s plied his trade at Southampton, Juventus and now Everton.

Even Lionel Messi has high hopes for Alcaraz, so clearly, it was a strange move from Flamengo to sanction his departure with such a low permanent buy clause.

Pereira further added that he reckons Everton will end up selling the 22-year-old to a rival Premier League club for double the amount in the future.

“Flamengo is just trying to get their money back from this player who just turned 22, and if he does well at Everton, he’ll go to another club in England for double the amount. And Flamengo won’t get anything.

“I thought the deal was bad, they could have gotten more out of the English team, especially considering the need. They needed the guy, he hit the post in the last game after only five minutes on the field. So, I think Flamengo didn’t negotiate well in this case.”

Clearly, Kevin Thelwell has pulled off an absolute blinder with this deal.
