Much has been made of Bayern Munich’s performance in the 0-0 Bundesliga draw against Bayer Leverkusen. Some compliment the mentality the players showed when their backs were to the wall, while many more criticize how thoroughly Leverkusen were able to keep Bayern pinned and helpless throughout the match.
Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany spoke of Leverkusen’s phenomenal performance and how it naturally forced Bayern into the defensive performance we saw that day. Asked again about the performance ahead of the Champions League tie with Celtic Glasgow, Kompany doubled down on this explanation:
“When the opponent deserves the right to play and we have to sit deeper – then that’s just how it is. In this one game, the opponent deserved it and we did it,” Kompany explained as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “We did it well, too. But ultimately, our first goal is always to win. And not just win, but also do it the way we want to. That will never change. But sometimes things are different, then you need the right mentality — and we showed that [against Leverkusen].”
