‘We are way behind our potential’ – Niko Kovac critical of Borussia Dortmund performance

Borussia Dortmund suffered successive Bundesliga defeats under Niko Kovac, losing 2-0 to their Ruhr neighbours Bochum on Saturday afternoon. A brace from Georgios Masouras means BVB now sit eight points adrift of fourth-placed RB Leipzig, with Champions League football next season looking a distant thought for Die Schwarzgelben.

Kovac’s side had 17 shots in total, eight of which came in the second half, but Dortmund’s head coach was critical of their performance after the break. After four big chances created in the first half, Jamie Gittens and Co. created zero in the second half despite 72 percent possession.

Speaking after the game, via Ruhr Nachrichten, Kovac said: “In the second half, we created almost nothing. We had the ball but were totally week in front of the opponent’s goal. We are way behind our potential.
“Of course, we are eleventh in the table, that is not what the club wants. We are not panicking, but we still have to win games as quickly as possible.”

Borussia Dortmund have one foot in the Champions League Round of 16 after their 3-0 win at Sporting CP in midweek, but were brought crashing back to earth against Bochum, who started the weekend at the bottom of the Bundesliga. With upcoming league games against Union Berlin and St. Pauli, Dortmund will have to be at their best.
