Chelsea, Liverpool approached Benfica in January; Alvaro Carreras, Tomas Araujo
Chelsea and Liverpool made unsuccessful enquiries for Benfica stars Alvaro Caarreras and Tomas Araujo in the January window.

According to Jornal De Noticias via Sport Witness, Benfica did not entertain enquiries from Liverpool and Chelsea for defensive duo Tomas Araujo and Alvaro Carreras in the winter transfer window. Which club wanted which player remains unclear, but those two could be the subject of interest when the summer market opens up.

Benfica did a good job in the winter transfer window to keep hold of some of their top players, including the defensive duo of Alvaro Carreras and Tomas Araujo. There were firm enquiries from top clubs for the duo, with the report naming Liverpool and Chelsea as teams that contacted the Portuguese clubs.

Benfica are well protected by release clauses for either player, as Carreras has a €50 million clause, while Araujo’s is €80 million. Much like in the past, the Portuguese club would have requested interested clubs pay those sums in full to stand a chance to sign either of those players, as they did not even consider those enquiries from the Premier League giants.

Chelsea scouted Araujo, among other names, as part of their search for a new defender in January, but they ended up recalling Trevoh Chalobah. They also let Axel Disasi and Gabri Veiga leave on loans alongside Ben Chilwell, and there is a distinct possibility the Blues might have attempted enquiries for both Benfica stars

The same can be said about Liverpool, who do have a shortage in defensive depth, although there are no alarm bells ringing for Arne Slot. They might have enquired about one of the two Benfica defenders, as Liverpool do feel the need to add new defenders for their future, and they might have considered bringing in one in January.

Benfica duo to attract big summer interest
Unlike the winter market, Benfica is likely to soften its stance when the summer market opens. Back in January, they would have demanded the full release clauses of those players. Manchester United are the only one with a favourable buy-back clause on Carreras. They could have signed the defender for €20 million had they chosen to, and the Red Devils did scout the Spaniard briefly.

Alvaro Carreras has been one of Benfica’s improved players, while Tomas Araujo is their key defensive member under Bruno Lage. In the summer, the Portuguese side might be open to selling the defensive duo and may do so at a lower cost than their respective release clauses, meaning interested clubs could have a good chance to land either.
