The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are head off to the semifinal round of the College Football Playoff thanks to a 23-10 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs on Thursday night. The win, though, wasn’t without controversy. Facing a fourth-and-short deep in their own territory while leading 23-10, Irish head coach Marcus Freeman sent the punt team out before eventually changing his mind and substituting all 11 players, sending the offensive back out onto the field. Georgia countered, racing its defense onto the field and getting lined up before the snap, but a Bulldogs defender jumped offsides, leading to a Notre Dame first down. However, officials appear to have missed a very clear penalty. Lined up at the bottom of the screen, a Notre Dame wide receiver could be seen flinching before Georgia jumped across the line. I mean, we subbed. So, it’s really unfortunate because I’ve been told by our head officials in the SEC you can’t do that, you can’t run 11 on and 11 off,” he told reporters after the game. “We did it in 2017 against Tennessee and we’ve carried that, practiced that and repped that against teams trying to do it and we were told by officials that you could not do that, so we were trying to say they couldn’t that,” he added. “But we got our defense out there, we were fine. I would have gone for it if I were them. I don’t think they were planning on going for it – they were going to hard count us. We prepare for that. We do it every week and we jumped offsides. But we were also told that you couldn’t do that in our league.” Notre Dame will face off against Penn State in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 9.
