Nebraska running back transfer Dante Dowdell(6-foot-2, 225) has committed to Kentucky, a source confirmed to CatsPause.com. 247Sports’ No. 6 rated running back in the transfer portalleft the Cornhuskers after one season with the program.
As a true freshman at Oregon in 2023, he played in six games. In those opportunities, he rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. In his lone season at Nebraska, the running back appeared in every game while making seven starts. He accumulated 614 yards and 12 touchdowns on 143 carries, as well as 7 receptions for 21 yards.
As a recruit out of Picayune Memorial (Miss.) in 2023, Dowdell was rated a .9424 on a scale to 1.000 by the 247Sports Composite, which equates to the nation’s No. 6 running back and the No. 135 prospect overall.
Kentucky had also pursued Louisiana-Monroe running back transfer Ahmad Hardy before he committed to Missouri. The Wildcats were tasked with replacing production lost when Demie Sumo-Karngbaye and Chip Trayanumleft the program for different reasons. In addition to Dowdell, the program has three running backs on the roster: Jamarion Wilcox, Jason Patterson and Tovani Mizell.
The NCAA introduced the transfer portal Oct. 15, 2018, providing athletes a path to explore their options. Players do not need to ask permission from their coaching staff in order to transfer. They merely need to request that compliance enter their name. Usually, it takes 24-48 hours for a player to appear following their request. Schools are free to contact a player without restriction once their name appears in the portal. While a player entering their name in the transfer portal means they intend to explore their options, it does not necessarily mean they will leave. A player is free to withdraw his name at any time. However, schools are under no obligation to keep a player on scholarship once they enter the portal.
