US Open Bombshell: Wimbledon Winner Splits with Coach

Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina made a major decision just before the 2024 U.S. Open, ending her long-term coaching relationship with Stefano Vukov. The split follows five years of collaboration, during which Vukov played a key role in Rybakina’s rise in tennis. However, Russian journalist Sofya Tartakova reported that Rybakina’s choice stemmed from a toxic relationship, with Vukov allegedly subjecting her to verbal abuse.

Currently ranked No. 4 in the world, Rybakina had to withdraw from the U.S. Open in August due to a back injury, even after winning her first match against Australia’s Destanee Aiava. Tartakova indicated that the pressure from Vukov contributed to Rybakina’s struggles, both personally and professionally, creating a “vicious cycle” of distress.

During a discussion on the Tennis Bolshei YouTube channel, Tartakova emphasized the heavy toll Vukov’s behavior had taken on Rybakina, noting that while Vukov was present in New York and ready to continue coaching, Rybakina ultimately chose to end their partnership due to the mental strain.

Rybakina’s parents were reportedly influential in her decision, concerned about the emotional impact on their daughter. Tartakova described Vukov’s constant verbal insults as detrimental, saying he “ate” at her confidence.

This decision represents a significant change in Rybakina’s career, as she achieved notable successes, including her Wimbledon title in 2022 and a finalist appearance at the Australian Open in 2023, under Vukov’s mentorship.
