Final push: Aryna sablanka’s chance of season success

World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, having clinched both hard-court major titles this season, arrives in Asia with a chance to overtake Iga Swiatek for the top spot in the WTA ranking

what’s at Stake

Once a promising teenager in the former Fed Cup, Sabalenka showcased her powerful baseline game during her team’s run to the finals in 2017. However, her early career was marred by inconsistency, particularly with her serve, leading to uncertainty about her ability to perform under pressure. In recent years, she has dedicated herself to refining her technique and competitive mindset, resulting in three major titles, including a dominant US Open victory where she lost just one set.

Currently, Sabalenka is enjoying the peak of her career, having built a formidable resume and feeling more at ease on the court. After winning the US Open, she expressed her commitment to aggressive play, stating that taking risks is essential for her success.

Having finally secured the US Open trophy after several near-misses, Sabalenka is now in a strong position to finish the 2024 season as the world No. 1

Motivation

Sabalenka is highly motivated this fall, eager to build on her Slam successes and reclaim the No. 1 ranking, which she held for eight weeks last fall. She aims to secure another victory over Iga Swiatek to even their season head-to-head record.

“I’m not focused on the rankings,” she noted after the US Open. “I want to play my best and bring my fighting spirit to each match. If I do that, I believe I can become World No. 1 again.”

Tournaments to Watch

Sabalenka’s upcoming tournaments in Asia start with the China Open in Beijing (September 23-October 6), where she reached the quarterfinals last year. Following that, she’ll compete in Wuhan, where she has an undefeated record of 12-0 from winning consecutive titles in 2018 and 2019. As the top seed in Beijing, she will face either Zarina Diyas or Mananchaya Sawangkaew in her opening match.
