It was wet and it was goalless – but it was an entertaining night of positives for both teams at the VX3 Stadium on Friday night when Torquay United got their pre-season going against a Buckland Athletic side keen to impress.

For Torquay fans, it was a chance to see all 17 players currently signed on for the new National League South season – after defender Ollie Tomlinson was revealed as the latest signing in the afternoon. There were also a few trialists – and, despite the game ending as a 0-0 draw, there was plenty to be happy about, and more to encourage the Torquay majority after the summer takeover by the Bryn ConsortiumIt was a record crowd for Homers Heath, with 1,781 supporters inside the ground, and it was a shame that the weather meant it wasn’t the evening everyone was hoping for – but both clubs played well, showed what they might be capable of this season, and for the managers it was a positive night but one that highlighted what still needs to be worked on.Torquay manager Paul Wotton said: “As we know, we have got tons to work on. We are very new into a new era and the most pleasing thing is minutes in the legs – simple as that It was a good workout, relatively injury free. Jordan Dyer has a cut on his head and there are a couple of other niggles, and the most important thing on the night is to be injury free.
