King's Lynn Against Darlington: Quakers Aim To Recover From Fylde Defeat

DARLINGTON are looking to recover from their midweek home defeat to AFC Fylde when they make the long journey to Norfolk to face King’s Lynn today.

After a great display to win 3-0 at Alfreton last weekend, Quakers lost 3-1 to Fylde on Tuesday to leave them sitting in a frustrating 13th place in the National League North table.

“It’s been a really tough start to the season and it’s not going to get any easier,” said manager Steve Watson. “We’ve lost to two teams, Chorley and Fylde, who are pretty much nailed on, if they continue the form they’ve got, to be around the top of the league and the play-offs at the end of the season, and there’s a team today, who after watching them win at Spennymoor in midweek, are outstanding.

“They’re full of energy and a very expansive team, and they will be a massive test for us, but if we’re going to be successful and be better than we were last season, then we’ve got to meet all challenges head on.”

Watson was initially quite critical of his team after Tuesday’s defeat by Fylde, but since then has seen some positives.

“I was disappointed with the way we looked after the ball, especially in the first half, and we caused a lot of our own problems,” he said.

“In hindsight, we stayed in the game for long spells and caused them problems. We just lacked a little bit of calmness at the vital times.

“Fylde had strength in depth and they wore us down in the end. We could have done better with all three goals. Looking back, the performance wasn’t without positives, but I thought it was at the time.”

Quakers won their last away game at Alfreton last Saturday, and Watson pointed out: “King’s Lynn will be different to Alfreton, both with and without the ball, and we’ve been looking at various options on how to play them.

“We’re really pleased with the squad that we’ve got, and some of the performances that we’ve put in so far, and as the season goes on, we’ll catch up.”

Striker Cedric Main is a big doubt with a cut head sustained in the defeat by Fylde, while defender Kallum Griffiths and midfielder Matty Cornish aren’t ready yet. Striker Jack Maskell is expected to pass a fitness test.

The Linnets, meanwhile, changed their manager during the summer, with James Rowe taking over from Adam Lakeland, who is now at Halifax Town.

They are second in the table, with wins over Spennymoor and Hereford and a draw at Telford.

They signed striker Michael Gyasi during the summer from Peterborough Sports, and he scored a hat-trick in midweek at Spennymoor. He also scored against Quakers last season for Sports.
